DAY 13: PEABODY AND TOUR

But Ashley, I didn't even get the "day" bookmark up yet! (She gets first dibs, cuz she's the one whose computer can get online... you just wait!)

We were hard at work at the archives ALL MORNING, so we took the afternoon off. Actually, as Ashley has reported, we had an appointment at "the Peabody," which would once (in my museum days) have generated great excitement, but today held only mild interest. A contact of some years ago, Dan in the curation group for vertebrate paleontology, gave us a tour of the storage areas and the historically relevant parts of the main museum. Relevant that is to the history of paleontology...

Upstairs, I did take a few pictures as we wandered around, and clearly Ashley found some things to get excited about, though not, I'm happy to say, in the dinosaur hall...

Outside, with the Peabody Museum's new sculpture of Torosaurus, Ashley was even more animated!

After the drive to the Peabody and a brief recovery, we visited East Rock Park, northeast of New Haven. East Rock is 356 ft tall and 1.5 miles long-- what we would normally call a cliff, of beautiful red Connecticut sandstone, same as many of the buildings at Yale are made out of. The views, as you can see, are tremendous. First photo is Ashley checking out the Connecticut River Valley to the north.

This one shows Ashley at the main overview, looking south-- New Haven waterfront and harbor over her right shoulder (that is, left in the picture), and Yale and downtown over her left shoulder. Forgive the haze--not much I could do about it!

Since our feet were tired of locomoting around Yale, we stayed in the car and drove out to far western New Haven, where we dined at Carmine's Tuscan something... a fine Italian restaurant that was highly (and deservedly so) recommended by AAA. Thanks again for dinner, Uncle Hadi!

By the way, photo lovers, do check out Ashley's photos posted on photobucket if you can-- she has 61 up so far, so you'll get a much wider view of our activities... See link under her "Sunday-Monday" post!

Tomorrow the plan is to head for the beach, if possible. Driver is convinced a couple million people have the same plan, but we've got to get Ashley's toes in the Atlantic before she leaves...
